My personal experience was in one of the private restaurant rooms in the upper part of the hotel. The hotel dates back to the 16th or 17th century (I think) and this room was one of the originals of the hotel.
I was facing the doorway to the room and a figure in black (I thought it was a waiter) caught the corner of my eye and came towards me. I was talking to a friend so I wasn't really concentrating on the figure and just thought a waiter had entered the room to clear away plates. Someone tapped me on the arm twice so I turned to what I thought was the waiter to give him my plate but no-one was there.
Interestingly my friend saw nothing but I definitely felt someone and no-one was sitting on the side of me when my arm was tapped.
It is reported that two waiters have died in this hotel. One was supposed to have hanged himself and the other (quite recently) caught on fire in the kitchen and died.
There is supposed to be hauntings by the previous owner, John Fothergill. His portrait is in the bar downstairs and every time it is moved strange things happen in hte new location (ie they placed it in the celler and the celler flooded) but this could of course all be coincidence.
